Brian and Aubrey had good results with the new tournament software at the BC Winter games \u2013 with an invitation to run the head table portion of the venue at the 2020 games in Fort St. John (and likely the 2022 games when Vernon is hosting).<\/p>\n
Our youngest team member Teigan Bixby fought in the largest division and had good experience\u2014where she hopefully will be able to participate in the 2020 games. Nadine Bondt and Kiyoshi Comley received bronze and silver medals in their respective divisions. At youth provincials, Nadine took silver for U16-40; Kiyoshi silver for U16-38, bronze for U14-38; and Sydney Grevatt gold for U18-57.<\/p>\n
At Pacific International, Nadine was our only medalist receiving a bronze in U16-40. At Edmonton International, Kiyoshi was our sole competitor but managed bronze in U14-38 (his only loss to the gold medalist, in a decision). Sydney is working towards a tourney in England and both Nadine and Sydney are our hopefuls for the 2018 Nationals coming up in Calgary.<\/p>\n
The club has recreational members too!\u00a0 We are already looking towards membership for next season. We really want to get a 5 to 6 year olds kids\u2019 class going and investigating options for judo in area schools.<\/p>\n
Judo is a sport that promotes physical literacy. Unlike many other martial arts, there\u2019s no hitting; it is truly both the \u201cgentle way\u201d and a serious Olympic sport\/self-defense martial art. Learning to fall properly is a life skill everyone should master and a basic judo technique.<\/p>\n
We are planning a demo at the Japanese Cultural Society Spring Festival April 21. Our tournament will be held at the curling rink, April 13-14 (Friday night kata and Saturday shiai).
